Volunteering at Poole Athletic Club

Athletes Jo Pavey and Steffi Wilson promote sports volunteering at Poole Athletic Club.

Four-time Olympian and European and Commonwealth Games silver medallist Jo Pavey and Junior European Championship gold medallist Steffi Wilson visited Poole Athletic Club on Saturday, March 1st. 2014 to find out all about the club and the contribution volunteers make to it.

School children from five schools took part in an indoor taster session of sports hall athletics activities at the Ashdown Leisure Centre, and were put through their paces by Jo and Steffi.

The event was also part of sports volunteering charity Join In’s drive to find a national network of volunteers to help grassroots sports clubs grow participation in community sport.

Jo said: “If it wasn’t for volunteers, I would not have been able to have a career in athletics and fulfil my dreams.   I have really enjoyed being at Poole today seeing the contribution made by volunteers at the club.  Thanks to them the young children have really enjoyed themselves today. Volunteers are the backbone of sport.  That is why I am backing Join In’s campaign to recruit more volunteers into community sport.”

Steffi, who is a member of Poole AC, said:  “It has been great for me to see all the action today.
All athletes depend on volunteers.  My coach is a volunteer and he gives up so much time to help me.  Volunteers do everything at Poole AC and I am proud to be part of the club and to have seen all the action today."
