Purbeck Running Festival – Ultra, Marathon, 16k, 10k, 5k

September 18 - September 19

Purbeck Marathon

Purbeck Ultra

Building on the success of The Purbeck Marathon we are offering you a new challenge. Not for the faint hearted our new Ultra will challenge even experienced ultra runners.

With the marathon route already set up we though you’d like twice the fun, double the climb (7025ft), double the distance (54 miles) double the challenge. To put it another way The Purbeck Ultra climb is more than one and a half times the height of Ben Nevis!

Making good use of the existing marathon course with plenty of fully stocked water stations, fully signed and marshalled this Ultra will give you all the support you need.

Marathon

The Purbeck Marathon starts and finishes in Swanage in Dorset. From the Downs overlooking the beach, it heads towards Durlston Country Park and the Jurassic coast path, before going through the villages of Worth Matravers and Kingston.

It then heads towards Swyre Head, to pass Heavens Gate and along the ridge towards Tyneham Cap. From here it leaves the coast path and runs through the deserted village of Tyneham. The route then continues up onto and along the ridge of the Purbeck Hills towards Corfe Castle, to pass below the battlements of this 11th century castle and into the village square. The route then returns to the hill Ridgeway and heads towards Swanage, to finish back on the seafront.

The entire route has spectacular views which will help to combat fatigue. Weather permitting there will also be stunning views of Portland, Poole Harbour and the Isle of Wight. The Purbeck Marathon has a number of hard climbs and uneven paths but is signposted and marshalled throughout. It is not, in any way, comparable to running a city marathon. It is tough, but where else can you do your post race icing by going for a swim in the sea?!

There is a time limit of 7 hours, with progressive course closures, so please bear this, and the course profile in mind when applying. The Purbeck Marathon is the main event of The Purbeck Running Festival – a local community event, put on by volunteers, with the proceeds being distributed to charity.

16k

The Purbeck 16 is actually more than 16 miles and is in fact closer to 16.5 miles and is a great step up from a half marathon.

The Purbeck 16 starts and finishes in Swanage. From the Downs overlooking the beach, it heads towards Durlston Country Park and along the Jurassic coast path before going through the villages of Worth Matravers and Kingston.

This is where the route separates from the Marathon and cuts across heathland towards Corfe Castle and meets up with the Marathon Route on the common. The route then picks returns to the hill Ridgeway and heads towards Swanage to finish on the seafront.

The entire route has spectacular views which will help to combat fatigue. Weather permitting there will also be stunning views of Portland, Poole Harbour and the Isle of Wight. The Purbeck 16 has a number of hard climbs, uneven paths and is nothing like running a road based race!

Just like The Purbeck Marathon, The purbeck 16 is a local community event and the proceeds will be distributed to local charities. Just like the marathon this is more than just a 16 mile race, it’s a Purbeck 16.

10k

The Purbeck 10K is a new race chosen to compliment the existing Purbeck Marathon and Purbeck 16. The Purbeck 10K will use the same start and a portion of the existing routes before turning uphill and back on itself to finish at the start line.

As always our races give you more and in this case it is a little more than 10K

Just like or other races the Purbeck 10K is tough but very scenic and the shorter distance give those that cannot take part in the longer races the chance to experience the scenery for themselves.

The Purbeck 10K has a couple of hard climbs, uneven paths and is nothing like running a road based race!

The Purbeck 10K is a local community event and the proceeds will be distributed to local charities

Purbeck 5k

Taking advantage of the course that is already set up, The Purbeck 5K will start and finish on the downs above the Pier in Swanage.

Designed to give all ages something to have a go at and with 195m of climb and decent in such a short distance, this route will still be a challenge even though it is only 5K.

The Purbeck 5K is a local community event and the proceeds will be distributed to local charities. Just like the marathon this is more than just a 5K race, it’s a Purbeck 5K.
